When negative feelings arise in the form of fear, anxiety, aversion, doubt, or the like, we pause and try to bring awareness to the negative thoughts that accompany them. These thoughts are the food that keep the negativity alive and give it strength.

Negativity itself is what it is, and as a consequence of our past we must allow it time to wear itself out. Therefore, we do not need to fight against the negativity or the feelings that come with it, nor try in any way to change or remove them.

What is important is to stop feeding negativity by dwelling on the related thoughts. When negativity arises and we pause with awareness of the thoughts that surface, we can say to ourselves: “Ah, this is how negativity is being fed. Well, I will not feed it anymore.” After that, we can direct the mind toward objective and equanimous observation of the present feelings and thoughts. If however, we are yet unable to do this, we can redirect our thinking to something positive, for example, to gratitude.

Through the repeated practice of pausing, bringing about awareness, and observing or redirecting our thoughts, we remove the food that gives negativity its energy. In this way, it gradually and naturally weakens until it eventually disappears altogether. But as long as we surrender to the related thoughts in the face of negativity, we not only sustain it but even strengthen it.

Therefore, let us not fight negativity, but simply stop feeding it.
